Freegle Etiquette

  • We know you don't really need reminding, but be polite! Please and thank you go a long way towards making sure someone even considers passing their item on to you.

  • Think carefully before asking for an Offered item - do you really want it? Are you able to pick it up from its current owner? (The links page has information on finding locations from postcodes if you are unsure.) It is very frustrating to offer something to someone only for them to back out at the last minute or, worse, just not turn up.

  • When responding to an Offer, give people the information they need to make a decision. Include suggested dates and times you could pick up or pass on the items, and your contact information, including your phone number if you are happy to do so. Make sure you respond directly to the original author and not to the group!

  • If you do change your mind, let the Offerer know so that they can move on to the next person on their list.

  • If you cannot pick something up when you said you would, let the Offerer know beforehand if you can, or at least contact them to explain and apologise afterwards. No-shows are a major cause of frustration!

  • Do not try to contact people multiple times. If you don't hear from them, consider the opportunity lost. Remember that emails can go astray or be wrongly marked as spam. The person may not be deliberately ignoring you!

  • Always be honest about your intention for items. Obtaining Freegle items to sell on or use for a business is fine, as long as you declare the fact. This gives people the chance to make an informed decision about who gets their item. Members found to have been dishonest will be issued with a Strike - two Strikes and you're out.

  • Consider making an OFFER or two before placing WANTED requests. The Freegle community is about give as well as take, and people may be reluctant to give to new members who suddenly turn up with a long list of wanted items.
